Library News

Beginning in January, the library is planning to shelve the fiction and non-fiction books in a different way. Books will be shelved according to genre or category of book, like in a bookstore. For instance, all dog books will be on one shelf, all books related to space will be on another shelf and all Lego books will be on another shelf. Hopefully this will make it a lot easier for you to find the kind of books you like to read! This may take a while so please be patient while this re-shelving takes place. The online card catalog will also be changed at the same time. Stay tuned for more updates about this change.

The Weather Outside is Snowing…

I know it does not snow here, but I needed a title that would make you look. Come by and visit the library before school, even if it is just to get out of the cold. The library is open before school every Tuesday through Friday morning. Check out the new arrivals, browse through some comic books, play a board game, draw on the lap boards or sit and speak with your friends. I always welcome visitors. If you cannot visit before school, the library is open after school until 3:45 p.m. every Tuesday, and Wednesday and most Thursdays. (It is not open the first Thursday of each month for faculty meetings.) And of course, the library is open during lunch.

Yearbook

If you started here at Prentice after the school portraits were taken, drop by the library and have your portrait informally taken for the yearbook. I do not like to have blank boxes above names in the yearbook, so I strongly encourage you get your photo taken before February. I need to put up the backdrop in the library, so please let me know the day before you want to have your photo taken.

Book of the Month - Matched by Ally Condie

Each month a new book will be highlighted. The type and interest level of the book will vary each month. This month the book is for 8th to 12th grade students. Come by the library to check it out! Mrs. Pelen and I both read this book last month and recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about dystopian societies. The book is a fast read.

Summary

Book Cover

Cassia lives in a perfect society. Food, housing, clothing and education are provided by the society and at the age of seventeen, she is “matched” with her perfect mate. At her matching banquet, her match turns out to be her long time childhood friend, Xander. She could not be more excited, until she sees another boy’s image in addition to Xander’s image on her micro card. The “officials” tell her the second image was a mistake, and to forget it ever happened. However, this event, starts her quest on finding out more about Ky, the other boy. Through the story, she begins to fall in love with Ky, and begins to question the “match” and other rules provided by the society as she learns about her society. Maybe her perfect society is not so perfect after all. This is the first book in a trilogy. You will not be able to stop after reading the first book.
